Kubernetes containers are designed to be used in a cluster. This is a nice feature because you can use a container orchestrator to manage a cluster of containers, which makes things simpler. But, again, you will have the option to install a container orchestrator.
minikube is actually a bit easier to setup than kubernetes, and is also one of the more popular orchestration platforms for Kubernetes. The idea is that you don’t have to install one, but it is a very nice option.
